California generally doesn’t allow ammunition purchased online to be shipped directly to a consumer’s home. Instead, ammunition purchased from an out-of-state or online seller generally must be delivered through a California licensed ammunition vendor or appropriately licensed firearms dealer, where the required California eligibility check and delivery process can be completed.
Clear Sky Armory charges $0 to receive and process your online ammunition order.
For most customers who qualify for California’s $5 Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check, your total cost to us is just the $5 state fee.
No receiving fee. No transfer fee. No per-box fee.
How It Works
1. Buy Your Ammunition Online
Shop with the online ammunition retailer of your choice.
Select the ammunition you want and proceed through the retailer’s checkout process.
When asked where the ammunition should be shipped, select Clear Sky Armory as the receiving dealer or ammunition vendor.
If the retailer doesn’t already have us listed, send us an email at clearskyarmory@gmail.com or text us at (530) 616-8146 and we’ll get ourselves registered in their database.
2. Notify us that the your Ammo is coming to us
Send us an email at clearskyarmory@gmail.com with your receipt and shipping information and your phone number if you’d like us to text you when it comes in. Otherwise, we will just notify you via email.
3. Have the Ammunition Shipped to Clear Sky Armory
The retailer ships your ammunition directly to us instead of to your home. When your shipment arrives, we’ll receive it, notify you and and hold it for you until you can make down to pick it up during normal business hours.
Please make sure the order has your name on it.
That allows us to quickly identify who the ammunition belongs to when it arrives and that we don’t mistake it for one of our own inventory orders.
4. Wait Until We Tell You Your Order Has Arrived
Carrier tracking may show that your package has been delivered before we’ve had an opportunity to receive and process it.
Please wait until you receive confirmation from us that your ammunition is ready for pickup before making the trip to the store.
5. Come to Clear Sky Armory
Come any time during normal business hours. When you arrive, we’ll complete the California ammunition eligibility check required for the transaction.
For most customers who already have a firearm recorded in California’s Automated Firearms System (AFS) with information matching their current identification, this is the Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check.
California DOJ Fee: $5
Clear Sky Armory Receiving/Transfer Fee: $0
Once you’re approved and the required transaction information has been completed, you can take your ammunition home.

There is no minimum purchase and we don’t charge you based on the number of boxes in the shipment.
What Do I Need to Bring?
Bring a valid form of identification that satisfies California’s requirements for an ammunition transaction.
Your information needs to match the information used for the California eligibility check.
If you’ve moved since your last firearm purchase, changed your name, or the information on your identification doesn’t match California’s firearm records, contact us before coming in. You may need additional documentation or a different eligibility-check process.
What Is the $5 Ammunition Eligibility Check?
California DOJ’s Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check compares the purchaser’s information with records maintained in California’s Automated Firearms System.
The fee is currently $5 per transaction. California DOJ Ammunition Purchase Authorization Program
This is the check that applies to many California firearm owners purchasing ammunition.
However, not everyone qualifies for the Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check.
What If California Can’t Approve Me Through the $5 Check?
Don’t panic—it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re prohibited from purchasing ammunition.
A common issue is simply that the information you provide doesn’t match a firearm record in California’s Automated Firearms System.
For example, there could be a discrepancy involving your:
- Current address
- Name
- Driver License or identification information
- Firearm records
California provides other ammunition eligibility-check procedures for customers who can’t use the Standard Ammunition Eligibility Check. Those procedures can take longer and may involve a different state fee. California DOJ Ammunition Purchase Authorization Program

Do I Need a Firearm Safety Certificate to Buy Ammunition?
No.
California’s Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) requirement applies to firearm acquisitions. You don’t need an FSC simply to purchase ammunition.
The ammunition eligibility check is a separate process.
Is There a Waiting Period for Ammunition?
No. California doesn’t impose the same 10-day waiting period on an ammunition purchase that applies to a firearm purchase.
Once the ammunition has arrived, the applicable eligibility check has been approved, and the transaction requirements have been completed, the ammunition can generally be delivered to you.
Can I Have the Ammunition Shipped Directly to My House
For most California consumers, no.
California generally requires ammunition sales and transfers to occur face-to-face through a licensed ammunition vendor, subject to statutory exceptions. This is why most online ammunition orders must be shipped to a California ammunition vendor or appropriately licensed firearms dealer for delivery to the purchaser.
Certain individuals and entities are exempt from these requirements.

Can I Order Ammunition From Any Online Retailer?
Generally, you can purchase from an online retailer willing and legally able to ship ammunition to a California ammunition vendor.
Retailers have different California shipping policies, though.
Some online stores may already have Clear Sky Armory in their dealer database. Others may ask you to provide our dealer information before they’ll ship.
